THE DAY I KNEW
A block of wood perfectly cut in a rectangular pism. The material of choice, Solid teak. Six surfaces to mold my thoughts whole. Clamped in a metal vice exposing only the surface I envision at that specific time. Penciled lines as guides and the light flowing through the studio as my spotlight. Mallet in my left hand… Chisel in the other. Eyes focused on lines, chisel angled for entrance. Mallet prepared for contact. And then the swing.
Right hand slide slightly against the weight of impact. My grip is adjusted.
Two swings in quick succession. The wood is torn… Exposed. This is the beginning of my first sculpture… first born.
